who were selfish, people who loved, and people who were strong. His characters were, in many ways, real individuals that stand the test of time, still presenting us with powerful
illustrations of the different genders. In Othello his portrayals of women are perhaps some of the subtlest, but by no means the weakest. In the following paper we examine the
role women played in Othello. In so doing we illustrate how the setting, language, and character of the women serve to advance the theme of the story. Bianca
Bianca is an innocent and the mistress of Cassio. She is completely ignorant to the plans of Iago and Rodrigo. She is simply a woman in love with Cassio. Her
demeanor is relatively simple, yet she is quickly brought into play as the plot thickens. Her character serves to further enhance the setting that will begin with Emilia in terms
of the posed guilt of Desdemona. When we first see Bianca she is asking Cassio where he has been. Cassio is beset with trouble as he holds Desdemonas handkerchief. Bianca
notes it and states: "O Cassio, whence came this? This is some token from a newer friend: To the felt absence now I feel a cause: Ist come to this?
Well, well" (III, iii). This begins the confusion for Bianca, and also serves to further enhance the condition of the deceit taking place as it originates from Iago and
