Aristophanes work possesses a woman as the main character. In both works one can clearly see the complexity of the role of women in the time. The following paper examines
how women are depicted in the two works. Women in The Odyssey and Lysistrata Homers story presents women in a very fascinating manner. First off there are many
strong women, but they generally tend to be goddesses and women of some spiritual and ethereal power. Then there is Odysseus wife Penelope. She is a strong woman, standing solid
for years waiting for her husband, and successfully keeping suitors at bay. But, at the same time she is clearly nothing more than a woman, an entity to be owned
by men and she sits, as any good woman would do, waiting for 20 years for her husband. One author argues that she is unlike many other women in Greek
literature for this because, "On the surface she may seem very meek, yet in reality she is very clever" (Rhoads). This author
also notes that even when she met with her husband near the end she still did not run into his arms, remaining cautious and loyal in case it wasnt him.
But, in all reality, this simply demonstrates a strong woman, but still a woman who will do what is best for her man. She was the perfect woman because of
this for she always stood by her men and put them before herself, demonstrating the best a woman could be. Lysistrata is
