than 100 years. Interestingly enough, women have been in law enforcement longer than they have had the right to vote. The following paper examines the history of women in law
enforcement and present day conditions. Women in Law Enforcement As mentioned, women have been in law enforcement for more than a hundred years. It appears as though one of
the first positions for women was in relationship to incarcerated women and youth: "In 1845, New York City officials hired two women to work as matrons in the citys two
jails after the American Female Moral Reform Society campaigned for the matron positions to be created" (WomenandPolicing.org, 2009). It was hoped that the police would then hire women for individual
police stations too but this was not to be (WomenandPolicing.org, 2009). Interestingly enough, the first woman who is stated as having become a police officer was Mary Owens, who became
an officer in 1893 (WomenandPolicing.org, 2009). She was a widow of a police officer and it appears as though sometimes a police department would hire a widow as a sort
of death benefit from the department (WomenandPolicing.org, 2009). Owens was apparently the first women to ever receive the power to arrest (WomenandPolicing.org, 2009).
In the year 1905 there came Lola Baldwin who "was given police powers and put in charge of a group of social workers in order to aid the Portland, Oregon
Police Department during the Lewis and Clark Exposition. She was the first woman to work as a sworn police officer in the United States" (WomenandPolicing.org, 2009). The reason for hiring
