aware of the conditions facing women of Islam. While we can perhaps chalk a great deal of the media up to the fact that the political bodies want to give
us a reason to back them in their presumed human rights activities, we can also understand that much of what we hear concerning Muslim women is correct. The women of
Islam, or Muslim women, no matter how we look at it, are generally a very oppressed group of people who are pushed aside and essentially abused in many physical and
psychological ways. They are individuals who essentially have very few rights in their particular societies, and individuals who are consistently and constantly fighting for change. In the following paper we
examine the world of women in Islam, discussing if they have come a long way, or not. Women in Islam In understanding the position of Muslim women in
the world it is perhaps important to examine some of the historical realities associated with women. The Islamic religion is not a religion that originally set out to oppress women
and in all honesty, "For his day, the Prophet Muhammad was a feminist. The doctrine he laid out as the revealed word of God considerably improved the status of women
in 7th century Arabia" (Time, 2001; 50). For example, while many pagan societies of the time buried unwanted female infants alive, "Islam prohibited the practice. Women had been treated as
possessions of their husbands; Islamic law made the education of girls a sacred duty and gave women the right to own and inherit property" (Time, 2001; 50). In addition we
note very forward thinking when we understand that "Muhammad even decreed that sexual satisfaction was a womans entitlement....The Prophet darned his own garments and among his wives and concubines had
