society. In Mary Shelleys Frankenstein and Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre the reader gets two very different looks at the role of women, and the independent or dependent nature of women.
Both novels were written by women but only one has a female character as the main character in the work. The following paper examines the extent to which the women
in the novels portrays a sense of independence. Women in Frankenstein and Jane Eyre In the story of Frankenstein the entire story revolves around issues related to male
and male dominated conditions. Interestingly enough, Shelleys mother was an incredible advocate and fighter for the rights of women, yet her novel does not really present a strong woman at
all. The main female character in this novel is the fianc? and then wife of Frankenstein. There is Frankensteins mother as well, though her role, while alive is far less
important than the role of Frankenstein and men. In Jane Eyre the primary character is a woman and the novel demonstrates the various levels of struggles she goes through in
order to survive. Bronte was known for having grown up in a family made up predominantly of her sisters, all of whom it seems, were involved in the literary world.
The character of Jane is sent to live with a relative when she is young, and then sent off to a school. She finds herself applying for work to be
the teacher/nanny of a child and then further encounters experiences that force her to struggle for survival. In essence, this story is about a womans ability to be independent in
a mans world, even if that independence is limited. Frankensteins mother was a good mother, a kind woman, and perhaps the epitome of a good woman in the times.
