Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 10 page report discusses the fact that
women who are now thought of as the classic female comedians or
comediennes of their time offered characterizations of women that
often fell somewhere between the ridiculous and the even more
ridiculous. Gracie Allen was the perfect compliment to George
Burns with her addled logic and baby girl voice. Lucille Ball’s
exploits in “I Love Lucy” ranged from her desperate attempts to
be in one of Ricky’s nightclub shows to her get rich quick
schemes. Phyllis Diller was raucous in every aspect of her
demeanor. Her clothing, hair, laugh, and jokes virtually
screamed at her audience but she was the first female stand-up
comedian. The presence of women in comedy has been expanding for
decades and comediennes have come to be acknowledged as a truly
unique source of humor. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
