For several decades, if not several centuries or more, women have struggled to find a place in the military as it involves battle. While many women may have no desire
to enter aggressively into combat others feel it is their right, if not their duty, to engage in such activity. Presumed gender roles have generally prevented women from entering into
combat positions as men have felt uncomfortable with women in combat for numerous reasons. It is often believed that a woman does not have the capacity, emotional or physical, for
combat, and that the men would be distracted, feeling a need to protect the women and thus taking their mind off of the task at hand. However, history has proven,
as have other cultures, women can perform successfully in battle. And, it is also noted that many people believe that women should be allowed into combat positions if they are
qualified and they desire such a position. In the following paper we examine some of the history of women in combat, and then argue that women should be allowed to
enter into combat positions. Women in the Military-History Throughout the history of mankind women have been sneaking into positions where they could be actively involved in battle. One of
the most famous of these women is perhaps Joan of Arc, though there have been many others. For example, during the American Civil War there were presumed to be perhaps
as many as a thousand women who disguised themselves and became actively involved. One author presents us with but a few of the women who were known to have fought
in battles: "Mary Hancock, a school teacher and abolitionist, fought with an Illinois regiment ... Anny Lillibridge fought with the 21st Michigan until she was disabled by a bullet wound
...
