with tradition and with inequality. Women were expected to serve and to be faithful while the men did more or less as they pleased. Women were subservient to
their men, and the sign of a good wife was one who knew how to keep quiet despite what her husband did.
Religion enforced these beliefs and their were many who endured their fates out of commitment to religious principles. Furthermore, there were many women simply afraid to do otherwise
because they didnt know any differently. They had been raised in families which functioned much the same way so something different was out of their reality.
However, in the past few decades in China there have been many changes in regards to the role of women within that society.
As women continue to become more and more of an economic presence, they are also gaining a great deal of power and respect in their own homes as well.
This is evidenced by the skyrocketing divorce rate, which many attribute to the strength of women and their inability to continue to stand for that which was acceptable for years,
but isnt any longer. As the Cultural Revolution had its impact upon Chinese society, the role of women was forever changed.
Social perceptions are being challenged and attitudes continue to change on a daily basis. Chinese women are no longer tolerating the injustices which just one generation ago they believed
