America, although the United States was founded on freedoms and new opportunities, the old European ways still severely restricted the women in the new land, keeping them under patriarchal rule
to a large extent. The conditions that America has seen throughout its history is incredibly similar to that of the conditions experienced by Canadian woman. They were, in many ways,
subject to the rules brought over from other countries, whether those rules be French or English or Portuguese. In the following paper we examine the history of women in Canada,
from 1000 to 1800, illustrating how their story is a common one in a world of men. Early History As would be easily imagined, the history of Canada
in the very early centuries, before it was Canada, involves a country that was, like the United States, inhabited by a native peoples. And, these native peoples were incredibly diverse
as they ranged across a land that was just as large as the United States. In this respect it would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to try to illustrate
what life was like for native women in early Canada. The women of different tribes experienced different levels of power within the tribes. Some were matriarchal societies and others were
patriarchal. When we move towards discussing the roles and struggles of women who came over to Canada in the early years we find that not much information exists. And,
