depicted, for good or bad, through various forms of art. Two notable historical periods are that of the Medieval and the Renaissance. During these periods of time societies were changing
at a seemingly astounding rate. And, although the cultures were clearly very patriarchal in nature, they were cultures which presented women in slightly different forms. In the following paper we
present a separate examination of Medieval and Renaissance art as it concerned women. The paper then discusses how the two differed. Medieval During Medieval times women were not
necessarily highly regarded, much like many other periods throughout history. The social structure, as well as the political structure of the world was dominated by men. It was men who
made the decisions and men who controlled. Women were perhaps, considered to be not much more than livestock for their duty was to take care of a family and provide
children to a family. In regards to any artistic images of women what we note is the presence of pietas, or images of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary
was often seen in paintings and sometimes in sculptures. And, her presence was perhaps only provided in order to respect the religion, with perhaps the subtle need to have a
womanly figure that offered men a very subdued connection to women. The fact that this connection with women was incredibly subdued comes to us when we examine some of the
art from the time period. Mary was often depicted as submissive or incredibly bland and without emotion or power. She was, after all, only the mother of Jesus. She was
not an important figure, save for her presence within the story of the birth of Jesus, for without a Virgin mother Jesus would not hold the power he does as
