are provided with women who it seems, are ultimately controlled by the patriarchal society which surround them. Each woman may well try to use whatever skills or intellect she has
to survive and find a place for herself. But, ultimately these women serve to illustrate how patriarchal societies controlled women. In the following paper we briefly examine each story individually
and then present a brief argument which takes all the stories into consideration. Antigone In the story of Antigone we see how "Oedipus raised Antigone after he blinded
himself after the horrible ordeal seen in the first play, Oedipus the King....She accomplished everything for her father, from feeding him to helping him dress. She was very loyal and
caring towards her family, especially Oedipus" (Antigone and Ismene). However, at the same time she is something of an independent woman who does not necessarily agree with people such
as her sister who claims the following: "Think how much worse our end will be than all the rest If we defy our sovereigns edict and power. Remind ourselves that
we are women And as such are not made to fight with men" (Antigone and Ismene). In essence, we see Antigone as a strong woman but a woman who is
still powerfully under the control of a patriarchal society. "For Antigone, there could never be any laws that could stand in the way of her strong consideration of her
brothers spirit and loyalty, not even the punishment of an early death" (Antigone and Ismene). But, her will was never realized for she was only a woman. While she tried
to make a difference, showing that women could be intelligent and wise, her position was ignored because she was, after all, only a woman. Wife of Bath In
