in the best possible light. Often the small changes in society may be overlooked, either due to the ignorance of their importance or the lack of specific evidence, and
as such we need to look to other sources where we may piece together the information we need. Such is the aspect of women in American society between 1776 and
1865, there were many other aspects of society that were seen as more important, the gaining of freedom and the setting up of the republics government were all the priorities
of the time, but in looking back at this time we can see that there are divergent histories of society when we consider the role of women. In Europe
there was a high male ,mortality rate for the males, and as such the first aspect of life we may see as differences is the incidence in which there
was a female head of the household. Where the men were living longer, and there was a high population growth rate there were more marriages lasting with a male head,
and as such the incidence of male dominance were more prevalent. It is ironic in the land which had just claimed freedom the social structure due to poverty and
conditions was one where women would still find themselves oppressed, and more so than in their counterparts ion Europe. If we look to Europe at the end of the eighteen
century there was an incidence of between a sixth and a fifth of all households in England headed by a women., the equivalent of this in America was one thirteenth
