It is primarily the story of Celie, but also the story of other women as well, women who are not only held back in their lives because they are women, but women who are poor and in a world of men and a world of their heritage. They are, in many ways, cursed it seems to live a life of utter oppression and poverty. Yet they rise above these problems and find the most positive success they can in their limited world. The following paper briefly examines these issues and realities in Walkers novel. Women in The Color Purple Celie, in the beginning of the book, clearly puts the reader in a position where they cannot help but see that she is poor, black, and the victim of men. "I am fourteen years old...I have always been a good girl....He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it. But I dont never git used to it" (Walker 1). She is fourteen and is pregnant by her stepfather who rapes her continuously. Celies mother is ignorant to it but happy because he does not bother her anymore. These are the realities that Celie is born into and must grow up with. She is poor and must essentially raise children that are not hers, give up her two babies that she loves despite the rapes. She is a woman married off to a man who uses her, abuses her, and cheats on her with another woman.
