and the importance of men. They are normally secondary characters who do not appear to control the story. In truth, however, we often find these subtle and secondary characters deciding
what takes place in the stories. While they are not obviously in control, they possess a very subtle power that can make or break a family. This can be seen
in William Faulkners "Absalom, Absalom" and John Steinbecks "Grapes of Wrath." In the following paper we examine each separately and then provide a brief comparison of the two.
Absalom, Absalom This story is one wherein the men seem to utterly rule what is taking place. We note this when we see that Thomas Sutpen is a man of
determination, and a man who has had many different women. It seems that we cannot turn a page without finding someone new that he has slept with and fathered a
child by. When he first arrives in Mississippi with several slaves and an architect we know that he at least presumes to be a powerful man. And, he does, to
some extent, prove himself powerful and intelligent enough to make a fortune and thus educate his son and daughter. However, while we watch the son move on to be an
important character, the daughter eventually falls by the wayside. His daughter is of concern until we find out that the man she is in love with is actually her half
brother, a son fathered by her father through another woman, a black woman. Eventually Thomas son finds this out and he is incredibly angered by this fact. In truth, he
is so angered that he kills his half brother. So one may ask, where the women are while these men are conducting themselves in such horrific manners. they are, in
