in different positions than men, and experience different realities than men. Literature often reflects these realities. Even in novels which depict strong independent women we see that women experience American
culture differently. In the following paper we randomly chose two different recent novels which are written by women and about urban women. In each story, discussed separately, we see how
women experience urban American culture differently than men. The stories presented are "Back When We Were Grown ups" by Anne Tyler and "The Three of Us" by Cynthia Victor.
Back When We Were Grown ups This is a story of an older woman coming to grips with her past, her present, and her future. She is a modern
woman in many ways, for she is examining what she has done with her life, and what she hasnt done. The very first lines of the story tell us we
are certainly talking about a woman and a woman who is experiencing the feeling that her life should have been different: "Once upon a time, there was a woman who
discovered she had turned into the wrong person. She was fifty-three years old by then-a grandmother" (Tyler, 2001; p. NA). Now, by all appearances this is perhaps not any different
than the experience a modern urban man of her age may come upon. A modern urban man may experience a time in his life where he feels like his job
and his life has been for nothing. But, the fact that it is a woman and a grandmother presents us with experiences that are very particular to women. She
is a woman who is not altogether unsuccessful, for she enjoys a business of catering. But, still she feels that her role has been that of a woman who is
