women as well as in the development of women. The media often presents us with images of women that are far from reality, but they somehow indicate that this is
the norm and as such women should achieve these images. From being nothing more than a toy for men to being a svelte, though undernourished, creature the media influences and
pressures women in many ways. And, the end result is often that which nearly debilitates women, reducing their self-esteem and encouraging them to engage in less than healthy habits. In
the following paper we examine the media, primarily advertising, as it involves women, arguing that the media is powerfully responsible for how women see themselves. And, the results are often
negative. Women and the Media Though our society likes to claim that we present women as powerful entities that have all the control that men possess. We are
told that women can do anything men can do and that a successful career is just as available to women as it is to men. However, the media more often
than not presents us with images of women that are not any more advanced, socially speaking, than women of several decades ago. Women are depicted as creatures of sexuality and
creatures that nurture and tend house. We can look at almost any television commercial and note that women are often the ones taking care of sick people, the ones
purchasing and using dish detergent and other household items, and the individuals who seem to eat far less than anyone else. In a recent television ad, to cite and example,
we see a woman claiming, with self confidence, that she has been racing vacuums underground for quite some time. It is an image that presents us with a rip-off of
