industrialization and globalization and the various economic opportunities both present much has changed in contemporary China. Many have contended that globalization in particular is having an overwhelmingly positive impact
on Chinese women and their contributions to the economy. The thesis can be presented, however, that while womens contributions to the economy have definitely changed since the preindustrial years,
the quality of life that many lead is not that much better. Considered to be a third world country
just a few decades ago, today China is apparently thriving in the contemporary global market. This is evidenced, in part, by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and CIA
World Factbook listing the country in the top 15 of the 2007 per capita gross domestic products listing. For some Chinese women at least globalization has meant not just
that they have taken on new roles in Chinese economy but also that they have bettered their standard of living by doing so. While both of these points are
certainly debatable and very much dependent on a number of diverse factors, on thing is certain, the lives of Chinese women have changed considerably in many instances because of Chinas
changing economy and their expected role as contributors to that economy. Preindustrial Chinese culture was very much patriarchal. The womans responsibility was
