that women were working so many hours. It brought up the notion that women were different from men. This is something both good and bad. While it addressed the problems
of labor, it distinguished men from women, something not always applauded. Another incident that occurred early in the twentieth century was the Triangle Factory fire, which is an incident in
which many women were involved. Due to crowded conditions, and poor working conditions in general, this fire that was allowed to spread and killed many people. Women were a large
part of the incident, but the fire brought attention to the problems of labor in general. Ellis (1997) writes: "Monumental reforms flowed from the Triangle fire. New York states entire
labor code was rewritten, becoming the best of any state in the nation. Labor unions, so long ignored and repressed, began to come into their own" (p.494). Rose Schneiderman had
been involved in protesting against the business owners at the time, and was a survivor who went on to effect further change. At the time, the urban immigrant and working
class woman had a lot in common. They were overworked and underpaid, and soon, organized labor would come about. There were a myriad of problems, but highlighted were the working
conditions which had since been changed through unionism and the passage of labor laws. Other social changes would arise and this would effectively help to transform society. For example, there
had been a shift in womens roles. Feminists like Crystal Eastman would pave the way for changes for women in society. Sociologists like Florence Kelley also helped to that end.
