Frances Burney are two authors whose work presented the reader with such perspectives. By todays standards we are perhaps not powerfully moved by the social and gender comments that the
authors make in their novels. But, they are authors who present us with a very strong understanding of the topics of realism and women. Bearing that in mind the following
paper examines some of the perspectives within Jane Austens "Northanger Abbey" and Frances Burneys "Evelina" as they offer us realism and the position of women. Northanger Abbey In
this particular book we see a powerful theme concerning money in the following line, a statement made by Isabella Thorpe: "It is not a trifle that will support a family
nowadays; and after all that romancers may say, there is no doing without money" (Austen NA). Essentially the conversation involves Isabella claiming that both Catherine and her man have money,
but certainly not enough to live on: "for what were you to live upon, supposing you came together? You have both of you something, to be sure, but it is
not a trifle that will support a family nowadays" (Austen NA). As we can see, money is an incredibly important issue in this conversation and throughout the book and
therefor, it offers the reader a glimpse into realism concerning the social conditions of the time and also offers an understanding of the position of women, the very real position
