There were many individuals who felt that the United States had no right to be in Vietnam, much less any right to involve themselves in warring in Vietnam. Many of
these individuals protested against the war and protested against war in general. The following paper examines what role women played in protesting the Vietnam War. Women and Protesting
During the Vietnam War In many ways one could well argue that women and men protested equally and it was not necessarily something that was divided in relationship to the
gender of the individuals protesting. It was a time when, in many ways, young men and women were fighting for the same things and as such stood equally with one
another. However, as is often the case with any powerful and potent social issue men and women were also divided in relationship to developing different groups to protest involvement. At
the same time many were just working towards positive change and gender was not a concern. For example, "Some in the movement hoped to bring about changes in those policies
by changing the minds of people in power, others by changing those in power, and still others by rejecting power and acting for ourselves" which is not something directly related
to any gender focus on protesting (Stew, 1991). There is also the interesting and informative truth regarding how many women may have
just felt that it was a mans war, and a mans world at that time. "There was no woman in senior foreign policy making positions except for Margaret Chase Smith,
the minority leader on the Senate Armed Services Committee" and she was a woman who seemed to support the war (Jeffreys-Jones, 2001). This author further notes that the war itself,
