The following paper examines the impact of Chinas population policies, from the 1950s to present, on women. Women and Chinas Population Policies
"How population issues have been addressed since 1949 have been important components of Chinas economic, social, and political development during the last half of this century" (Geography: Chinas Population). This
particular year, or 1950, is considered one of the most important times in Chinas history as it relates to population concerns due to the fact that the population was beginning
to be seen as threatening in relationship to growth. For example, "Chinas first modern census in 1953 revealed a population of 583,000,000" (Geography: Chinas Population). By 1999 that number had
doubled (Geography: Chinas Population). From 1949 to 1979 the population had quickly grown and demonstrated that something needed to be done if
the people were going to be able to sustain themselves independently in the nation. "Between 1953 and 1964, barely ten years, the countrys population swelled by an additional 112,000,000 as
death rates fell and birth rates remained high" (Geography: Chinas Population). Interestingly enough, Chinas period known as the Great Leap Forward also saw an incredibly famine that resulted in as
much as 20,000,000 deaths, which led to many people crying out about the population growth and concerns for the future (Geography: Chinas Population). However, population policies were still several years
