But even today, women traveling alone sometimes find themselves facing the kinds of prejudice and assumptions that would never be applied to men in the same situation. Given that
women traveling (especially alone) still face unwarranted attention in some cases, how much more difficult would it have been for women traveling in the 19th century? This paper looks
at the experiences of women travelers in 19th Century Latin America. Travel as Liberation Travel is liberating because it frees travelers from their idea that there is only
one "right" way to live. Travelers are exposed to other societies that work perfectly well, even if they are vastly different from the one at home. And this
is exactly why travel can be considered "dangerous" in some respects; because it shows people that the way they live is not necessarily the only life possible. This is
especially true for women, who have lived for millennia being defined by their relationships to others instead of being seen as individuals: "Throughout the ages, journeys have been tied to
gender, class and historical events, and few women were given the opportunity to travel ... Traveling, for women, has been forever associated with a forbidden mystery" (Agosin, 1999, p. 12).
In addition, travel for women "has been a metaphor for womens true liberation" (Agosin, 1999, p. 12). Women, by custom, history and tradition, are expected to stay
