more aggressive in prosecuting these mobsters. No longer are these figures larger than life and District Attorneys want their hides. What has changed to some extent is the role the
women in the Mafia play. While most retain the stereotypical identities given them, some have begun to remove their blinders and actively participate. This phenomenon has been seen in Italy.
However, for the most part, women know their place in the mob which is typically on a pedestal, whether she is a wife, a daughter or a girlfriend. Many films
have been made depicting Mafia wives as quiet and unassuming, wives who listen to their husbands and play traditional roles. In Married to the Mob, for example, Michelle Pfieffer stars
as a Mafia wife in a lighthearted romantic comedy. But movies like The Godfather give a more vivid, and dark account of what it is like to live the lifestyle.
The assumption that women are usually not participants in the crimes, but rather remain on the sidelines, will be shown. Additionally, a new attitude toward women has slowly evolved as
females are no longer held as high on the pedestal they once were. While men in the mob continue to treat their women well, it appears that the thinking perpetuated
by the womens liberation movement has seeped into Mafia culture and no longer is there an unwritten law that Mafia wives are off limits. An example of this is
