example, there have doubtless been many different matriarchal societies where women have ruled a community or a culture, but for the most part women have played the lesser role, following
the ideals and laws of men. The following paper looks at the struggles of women in society as represented by literature, ancient and more modern. The paper primarily examines the
role of Antigone in the play by Sophocles and the play "A Dolls House" by Henrik Ibsen. Womens Struggles in Society The story of Antigone, by Sophocles, is
one wherein a woman fights against the system to do what she feels is right. Antigones brother has been killed and the leader of her realm refuses to allow him
a proper burial for various reasons he feels are valid. Antigone believes that if her brother does not have a proper burial, a burial due a great man like her
brother, then his spirit and his reputation are lost. Antigone goes against the rulings of men and fights in the hopes her brother will get the burial he deserves. Interestingly
enough, women have generally not had the political voice that would allow for such demands. In fact, in the United States women have generally only had such power for a
century or more. And, in other parts of the world, a woman could not possibly assume she had the right or power to step up in a court of law
and fight for something she felt was right because these courts, or legal systems, are ruled by men. In many ways Antigone is a perfect example of heroic resistance
