identity. Within this story there are several African American women who ultimately find themselves oppressed in one way or another and most of them overcome their oppression in some way. The following paper examines three of the characters, Celie, Shug, and Sofia, and examines how they are oppressed and how they rise above that oppression. Women Rising Above Oppression in The Color Purple : The narrator and the main character of the story is Celie. Celie is a woman who is the most abused and oppressed. In the beginning of the story she is really only a young girl, a young teenager, and she is sexually impregnated by her father, or the man she assumes is her father, twice. Her children are taken from her and she ultimately finds herself married to a man with children, serving as nothing more than his sexual tool and homemaker to children not much younger than she is. Her entire life, in the beginning of the book, has been one of utter oppression and when the reader meets her she really does not have much of an identity for herself as of yet because she has been so oppressed, used and abused. She loses the one person she loves, her sister, as she is sent to live with another family and then goes off to Africa on missionary work with them. In essence, Celie is not only utterly oppressed but she is utterly alone. However, She appears to be a strong young woman who somehow knows that things should be better but yet is not possessed of the tools to discover how things should be, how she should be, or what she really wants other than some small amount of happiness.
