During the High Renaissance, women were allowed near equal status with men within the Humanist movement. This was especially true for artists. There were many great female artists as well
as male artists, such as Gentileschi, whose Judith Slaying Holofernes spoke of her rape and sisterhood and Fra Angelico and her religious interpretations. Art was being transformed by the Humanist
movement, giving women artists a change for recognition and development. Background After the Black
Death decimated the European population there was a period of strong economic recovery. Italy experienced an explosion in trade in tandem with urbanization within the newly created Florence, Milan, Naples
and Venice city-states. The upswing of this movement was prosperity and new forms of social interaction. In the background, wars brewed and many of the writers of the day, such
as Machiavelli, wrote about corruption in government and the papacy. In Florence, Lorenzo de Medici recognized this talent as a sign of genius
and art as a direct gift from the divine. Machiavelli authored The Prince, a treatise on political corruption and the misuse of power, and Petrarch headed a revolution in reason
that damned Medieval society. The fed the new view of humanity and artistic endeavors. Reason also created a desire to rediscover the great Greek and Roman classics. All of these
influences led to a process of discovering personal greatness. This was the beginning of the Humanist movement. Male art dealt with the publics
