The female prisoners charged the Department of Corrections with not properly protecting them from harm from security guards, as well as allowing them to be violated in ways that
were not part of their prison sentencing. WOMEN PRISONERS It should come as no surprise to people that women prisoners are molested more often than men prisoners, and
most often by those very people being paid to guard them. Accusations of rape, molestation, harassment and violence abound in the womens correctional facilities, but as one prisoner reported,
"Most officers will tell you, `go ahead and tell - its your word against mine. Who are they gonna believe? Im an officer, I have a badge on, Im
in a superior position to you" (Women in Custody, PG, 2001). The women prisoners of the District of Columbia brought forth an action against the Department of Corrections in order
to call attention to the atrocities to which they had been subjected on a regular basis. There are provisions in place that a female prisoner can take action and
report such activities. One such provision states that the "Bureau of Prisons agreed to provide all inmates with the telephone number of the Inspector General of the Department of
Justice, to whom they can report sexual assaults, threats or other ill-treatment" (Rights for All, Amnesty International, PG, 2001). The downside of this is that women cannot report things
that are done during the course of normal prison routine. These would include such things as guards watching them while the prisoners are nude, if the manner in which
