emotional intensity of both paintings is what ties them together, and that too will be explored. Pablo Picasso The example from Picassos is La repasseuse (1904) Woman Ironing.
This is a painting from what has been called Picassos "Blue Period," a two and a half to three year time in his early twenties when he was grieving the
suicide of a good friend, Carles Casagemas. Psychological implications are read into this period more than most. Blue was a melancholy color; in modern language today we
even equate the color with emotional sadness. Music has a similar terminology - the blues are sad and soulful. According to Johnson (1997), Picasso painted his friend "unsympathetically."
He painted him blue and shades of blue - another painting of the same period is labeled "Tragedy. Johnson also suggests that Woman Ironing still is a
"hopeful" painting because of the white dress the woman is wearing. The great thing, about a lot of art, is the viewer, often "gets" to have the ultimate translation,
