fact that gender-based barriers that previously prevented women from entering law schools have been removed, "informal and structural barriers" continue to "impede womens full participation in the legal profession."1 Likewise, while law schools have made progress in achieving gender equality, racial and ethnic women tend to be under-represented among law students.2 Some studies have of male versus female law school experience have shown that women are more likely to experience stress while attending law school and are less likely to participate in class.3 Women in a 1993 Canadian study described the atmosphere in law schools as being "hostile" or "chilly," despite the increased presence of women in Canadian law schools for at least a decade.4 This environment was found to restrict opportunities for women and was judged to be a "poisoned environment," particularly to women of color.5 One possible solution for correcting this situation would be for law schools to actively recruit more women to fill key faculty positions. 2. Women in private practice. Four gender related issues for women in private practice. While male and female graduating law students express interest in working in the private sector, women continue to be over-represented in the public sector.6 Furthermore, several years after graduation, there is even more divergence.
