The life must have also been frightening -- "savages," strange foods, people from other countries whom they couldnt understand, weather theyd never experienced, too many loved ones left behind. Even the upheaval of the revolution, the fear for the safety of their husbands and sons, the break from a government where all were citizens rather than subjects - to the women of the time, all of it must have had the unreal quality of a dream or a fairytale. Women of early America were the caretakers and support of the "fathers of our country." In the preparation and research for this essay, it has repeatedly struck me how important those fathers were in the development of the United States, how much they accomplished, what high ideals and values they held . . . all the aspects of democracy they were able to put into place. All these things were developed during the birth of our country. Isnt it surprising that so very little is ever said about the countrys mothers? The first settlements in colonial North America were founded in the early 1600s. Jamestown was settled by the Virginia Company in 1607. The "Mayflower" arrived in Massachusetts in 1620. Between 1628 and 1640, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was established. By the time of the revolution strong communal values and mores had been established in America. In many instances, women found themselves in a society more repressive than the one they had left behind. The constrictions of "proper" society and Puritanism must have been blessed by God. The colonies were growing and prospering and the people assumed that could not be possible unless God was pleased with their lives and performance. Late ...
