mines in order to help their families. WOMEN MINERS Naturally the women of the early twentieth century did not have nearly the options of the men in the job
markets of that time period. Women were expected to have to stay at home and cook and take care of children and the house for their husbands while their
husbands went to work in the coal mines. But generations of women found that that work was not enough to get the bills paid or to put food on
the table; in many situations some were without husbands to bring home a paycheck. The women of Appalachia, however, were a hardy bunch and many of them did not hesitate
to consider going to work in the coal mines. While some women did find work as clerks or school teachers not all of them were skilled in these areas
or able to find work of this nature. "Womens involvement in labor in the Appalachian mountains sparked great movements in union organization and activity, thus opening the eyes of
men and women around the country to the strength and perseverance of Appalachian women" (Appalachian Women 2002, PG). THE STRENGTH COAL MINING INDUSTRY It was coal mining that forever
changed the Appalachian Mountains, not only in looks but in the way of life for the people of that area. Many women worked alongside the men in the fields
but when it came to coal mining that was for the men only. Many believed that a woman in a coal mine would bring down disaster upon that mine.
