While things have changed over the centuries, the fundamental mindset has remained the same until very recently – the past several decades – where men are the wage earners and women maintain the household. However, as much of the twentieth century illustrates, women have since ventured out beyond the stringent boundaries established by a patriarchal society to help provide financial support for the family or seek out a satisfying profession away from home life, yet they are still expected to keep up the house, raise the kids and cook the meals with little help from men. However, as much of the twentieth century illustrates, women have since ventured out beyond the stringent boundaries established by a patriarchal society to help provide financial support for the family or seek out a satisfying profession away from home life, yet they are still expected to keep up the house, raise the kids and cook the meals with little help from men. Back in 1931 when Rugg published his book entitled An Introduction to Problems of American Culture, the only barometer upon which the author had to determine the changes of familial composition was from the past; at that point in time, technology was not such that he would have been able to project into the future and speculate what might occur over the following seventy years that would once again change the fundamental dynamics of the American family and the roles women played in the home. That particular point in time was awash with the aftermath of financial ruin and the pursuit of regained solvency by way of the Industrial Revolution. The responsibility placed upon the husband and father to support and protect his family during this time was instrumental in the way in which American families learned to survive, a time that also pointedly supported the role of wife as sole homemaker.
