They are not necessarily women who have suffered great physical abuse, but they have, indeed, suffered a great deal of psychological abuse, at the very least. The following paper examines the women, their abuse, and then discusses whether or not they should be found guilty, and serve time, for their particular crimes, based on the abuse they received. Wives and Crime in Trifles In Glaspells Trifles, originally titled A Jury of Her Peers, the story revolves around a crime scene wherein a man is dead. The woman who has perhaps committed the crime is not necessarily in the story as an active character for it is the other women in the story who slowly piece together her story and illustrate who she was and perhaps why she committed the crime. Interestingly enough, the men in the story have no idea what is really going on and it is the supposedly simple women in the story that unravel the details and solve the crime. They know what it is like to be a woman, they know the hard work women do, and they know the woman in question. In beginning to unravel who the woman is, or was at the time of the crime, the reader is first introduced to the condescending nature of men in general when one man says, in relationship to the state of the house, "Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies?" (Glaspell). MRs. Hale responds, "stiffly," "Theres a great deal of work to be done on a farm" which tells the reader that this man has no idea what a woman does on the farm, how much work she must do (Glaspell). The reader is given other comments that clearly indicate how ignorant these men are about what women do, ...
