The paper concentrates on the character of Michi Rodriguez and her reaction to the violence she sees. Discussion Violence against women has been part of society for millennia and continues today, though at least now people are more aware of it. It stems in large part from the failure of society to see women as people in their own right, and instead to continue to view them only as adjuncts to the men in their lives. In this structure women are not people, they are wives, mothers, lovers, sisters, aunts-but few of them are considered simply as individual human beings with an identity of their own, independent of their husbands, children and other relations. Until society accepts women as people, they will continue to suffer at the hands of men; tragically, those hands are most commonly those of the men who should love and protect them the most-the men with whom they are most closely involved. Violence is an underlying theme in The Have-Little, though it is not, as we might expect, between Jose and his wife Carmen; the physical violence is between Carmen and her daughter Lillian, whom she slaps repeatedly when she thinks the girl is being insolent or "disrespecting" her (Cruz). We do know, however, that Jose beat Carmen, so its probable that Carmen got her tendency to hit from him. The family lives in squalor and poverty, and one of Cruzs points is that poverty tends to breed violence. People who are desperately poor tend to want to blame others for their situation, and that can often lead to a violent outburst.
