of considerations in terms of end of life care. Typically, palliative care revolves around a patients wishes. In cases when a patient is incompetent for one reason or
another to express their wishes then someone else must determine the specifics of palliative care. Children, however, fall into a somewhat different category in terms of what is considered
appropriate and what is not in terms of what is provided to them and what is not during the last stages of their illness. When a child is not
of legal age, decisions regarding their care often fall to their parents or whatever responsible adult has been appointed to look out for the childs best interest. While the types
of decisions that these adults make in regard to most aspects of medical care, however, they can be a highly controversial when it comes to some aspects of terminal care.
This parent or responsible adult can even make such decisions as whether or not to provide the child with the nutrients and liquids they need to continue
to sustain their life. In effect, they are deciding whether or not to allow the child to continue to live the remaining days, weeks, months, or perhaps even years
of their life. Pros Those that support a
parents or other responsible adults role in end of life decisions for their minor child typically contend that palliative care for the terminally ill child is in fact the same
as any other aspect of that childs medical care. The adult is best equipped to make the decision because the child is mentally incompetent in terms of doing so.
