in popularity due to the many advantages that they bring the users due to the technical improvements. WLANs started out as limited technology that was used mainly for the transmission
of data to a data warehouse or use on a factory floor, this has now grown to enterprise networking to facilitate mobile working.
A local area network (LAN) is a network which is limited by location. The typical limitation may be in the region of 500 - 1,000 meters (Anonymous (d),
2003). This can be increased to up to two miles if needed (solution-datacomm-wireless.htm). This means that it is suitable for locations
which have a few buildings all in one area, or a building which will not support a wired network (Anonymous (d), 2002). Wireless networks are those which are not linked
to each other physically with wires. The main advantage of wireless network is the ability of mobility especially with the mobile phone network and the associated cost savings that can
be seen as a result of not being restricted to using the network in a single place (Anonymous (d), 2002). A wireless
LAN uses radio technology in order to transfer the data between the different terminals (Cisco, 2003). Institutions such as universities and retail outlets find that this is a useful
tool. This is achieved by a card being installed into the users computer called a Wireless LAN adapter card. This enables the computers to communicate with each other without the
need for a physical connection by plugging the computer into a terminal and accessing the network by way of wires. A wireless LAN
