colorful or dramatic as other famous painters of his day, is work that truly seems to reflect the life that he witnessed. His work often touched on the ocean and
the island activity of the Bahamas and yet it was also quite subtle in its presentation, leaving the viewer with a picture they would likely always remember. With broad strokes
and large areas of paint, his work did not always present the viewer with a powerful image of three dimensions, but it did leave the viewer with no doubt of
what it was they viewed in terms of subject matter. One such painting is titled "Sloop, Nassau" (1899). The following paper analyzed this particular painting. Sloop, Nassau This
particular painting is one that truly represents the style presented by Homer in many of his paintings. It was painted at a time when he lived in the tropics and
was truly inspired by all the activity he saw there in relationship to the village and the people who made their living from the sea. There is a richness and
depth to the painting, although it is not a depth that truly speaks of more than two dimensions. It is something of a flat painting, yet a painting that hints
at more than those two dimensions. This is achieved through limiting his use of shading and only subtly hinting at it, such as seen in the blues of the water
mixed with the grays. There is a hint of depth, yet not enough to make the painting appear to be truly three dimensional. As mentioned there is a great
