Odyssey the reader gets a very good and detailed glimpse into the nature of wine, and the role it played in the society and in relationships. It was, in many
ways, as important, if not more so in some cases, as food itself. The following paper examines wine in The Odyssey, wine in ancient Greek times, and then discusses how
it compares and contrasts to how the American culture relates to wine and alcohol today. Wine in The Odyssey In looking
at the presence and the role of wine in Homers They Odyssey one sees, towards the very beginning, how the suitors that sit around and take advantage of the supplies
owned by Ulysses household have no consideration for others and this is evident in the following line: "never giving so much as a thought to the quantity of wine they
drink" (Homer Book II). This offers up wine as a very precious and respected item in a household and the fact that they dont care how much they drink is
symbolic of their disrespect and disregard for Ulysses and Penelopes household. It illustrates how important wine is in the culture. This is further noted when the story tells the
reader how "everything well stowed, the wine in jars, and the barley meal, which is the staff of life" which indicates that wine ranks with the "staff of life" especially
considering it was mentioned prior to the barley meal (Homer Book II). And, also in this book it is noted how "Here, too, there was a store of fragrant olive
oil, while casks of old, well-ripened wine, unblended and fit for a god to drink, were ranged against the wall in case Ulysses should come home again after all" (Homer
