The user-friendly advantage that has long been associated with a Macintosh (Apple) has given way to the IBM (Microsoft) operating systems, which have come to mimic the ease of application for which Macs have been known. Because the standard IBM-compatible PC was far too complicated and incapable of easily interfacing with its user, Macs were long considered the easiest of all to employ. In fact, the easy-to-use aspect of Macs was a significant selling point for those who had little or no computer experience, giving them the instant advantage of simplicity and virtual effortlessness. However, IBM executives were not so blind as to see the inherent advantages of such ease in application, which is why the rush was on to model Windows after the popular Mac interface. When all was said and done, the original Windows 3.1 version was not as user friendly as a Mac, but it was pretty close for most people. What has since followed is just short of miraculous in terms of the transformation from Mac popularity to Windows loyal followers. The main appeal of Microsofts OS is its similarity to the Mac - yet with a greater simplicity than Apples version. Microsofts operation was modeled after the point-and-click process that made consumer computing so easy; as such, people were no longer terrified of having to memorizing and then applying DOS shortcuts - commands that number in the hundreds - just to write a letter to grandma.
