contender is Novell. Just this month () Novell has revived its franchise with Netware 5 with an emphasis on expanding their platform through direct integration (Glascock, 1998).
Novells new efforts could quite possibly result in Novell Directory Services becoming the directory of choice (Glascock, 1998). Novell is now competing in one of the fastest growing segments
of the information technology marketplace, Internet Service Providers (M2 Communications Ltd., 1998). Netware 5 provides a unique modular approach to directory services (Glascock, 1998). The combined power
of Novells Directory Services and the IP-based Netware 5 platform have the very real potential to attract a more than significant portion of the market which was previously monopolized by
Microsoft. These types of features allow ISPs to include value-added services such as Web caching, to accelerate their performance, and to provide more security and other features in network
management which have not been available before (M2 Communications Ltd., 1998). Web caching will be made available through BorderManager FastCache 3 (M2 Communications Ltd., 1998). Although this software
is only in Beta testing currently, it has the potential to be the most scaleable caching solution ever available (M2 Communications Ltd., 1998). Novell is successfully providing the
ability for ISPs and business customers alike to obtain a customized range of value added services. This is possible only through the software infrastructure which is currently available through
Novell (M2 Communications Ltd., 1998). Novell currently has no competitors on the immediate horizon as Windows NT 5.0 has been delayed in its release date to sometime next year
