everyday tasks. For many users, the ubiquity of the Windows operating system may have led them to believe it is the only option available. However, there are many alternatives to
Windows that each possess their own significant virtues that are worthy of exploration for one who is serious about computer usage. One of the most robust and featured challengers to
Windows ubiquity is the Linux-based Ubuntu operating system. This paper will explore the differences and similarities between Windows 7, the latest incarnation of Microsofts operating system, and Ubuntu. Linux
has something of a reputation for being difficult to use for the average person; for instance, older builds of the operating system forced users to install software by entering information
into an obtuse command line, an action that would have been entirely non-intuitive to anyone who first started using computers within the last decade ("Ubuntu", 2009). In recent builds of
Linux, however, such as Ubuntu, this command line functionality has been largely relegated to the background, and users can expect a more seamless experience when installing software, similar to what
Windows of Mac OS provides ("Ubuntu", 2009). This is but one indicator that Ubuntu is shaping up to take common criticisms into account and become an operating system truly capable
of competing category for category with Windows. In the dimension of usability, Ubuntu hedges a certain advantage over Windows. It is easier to install as it requires no serial
numbers or activation routines, and it includes a more robust selection of software right out of the box (so to speak) (Collins, 2011). By contrast, Windows 7 requires in-depth activation
routines and a unique serial code in order to begin using, and the installation is a complex procedure that can take up to several hours to complete (Collins, 2011).
