when we look at windows 2000 there is a leap when compared with windows 9x. The way in which the memory is used and managed can be seen as different in Windows 2000, it is also a much larger system, and as a result when we compare the memory needed during installation as well as used when the operating system is up and running we can see there is a large difference. For windows NT, as a comparison and windows 2000 is designed as an office operating system, not a home usage system, there is a need for 19 MB of RAM after the system has been booted up. During installation there will need to be hard drive space used of 150 MB. If we compare this to Windows 2000 then the comparison is striking. When Windows 2000 has been booted up it required the use of 29 MB, and the installation takes up 400 MB on the hard drive (Microsoft, 2002, Anonymous, 2000). This gives us an indication of the different size and different needs of a programme. When a O/S grows this much in size it is not feasible for the processes to remain the same, otherwise they would become slow and laboured. In looking a the minimum, system requirements there is the need for a Pentium compatible CPU at a clock speed of 133 MHz or more, 64 MB of RAM and a two gigabyte hard drive (Anonymous, 2000). However, as anyone can see, especially with the RAM size, the operation of the system may be slow and frustrating, even with the newer style of memory management (Microsoft, 2002, Anonymous, 2000). Realistically for the system to operate there is a need for at least 128 MB of RAM. This need for additional memory has also lead ...
