past. They are quite large as well. For example, Krauss (2008) reports: "The wind turbines that recently went up on Louis Brookss ranch are twice as high as the Statue
of Liberty, with blades that span as wide as the wingspan of a jumbo jet." Wind turbines in fact were hardly used to generate electricity in the past (Krauss, 2008).
Rather, it was a novelty. Yet, with rising oil prices, the use of such things grew as much as 45% in 2007 (Krauss, 2008). Before delving deeper into this subject,
it is important to explore the turbine, turbine theory and how the device originated. A turbine is a device for which energy is transferred in the context of continuous
flow such as gas, air, water or steam (Tiwari & Ghosal, 2005). It works through the use of dynamic action in respect to moving blades that appear on the runner
(Tiwari & Ghosal, 2005). The working principle associated with the turbine is provided in the form of an example: a steam powered engaged called aeolipile would cost of a boiler,
two hollow tubes which were bent mounted to a sphere, and a sphere (Tiwari & Ghosal, 2005). The steam would exit through bent tubes or nozzles, something that causes the
spheres to rotate freely (Tiwari & Ghosal, 2005). The result of all this would be a spinning sphere attributable to the reaction force that would be exerted by the stem
(Tiwari & Ghosal, 2005). The experiment would establish turbine theory (Tiwari & Ghosal, 2005). Wind turbines are utilized to take advantage of the natural wind energy that exists. Rather than
using cups or paddles for example, lift devices with airfoils such as those on the wing of airplanes are utilized to power turbine engines (Stitt, 1999). There are usually a
