of California is striving to achieve this mark by next year, with 33 percent as the goal by 2020 (Null and Archer 34). As world leaders grapple with the problems of global warming and the threat of catastrophic climate change, the need for a shift toward renewable energy sources becomes increasingly urgent. The following overview of recent innovations in wind energy utilization, as well as a brief look at possibilities for the future, indicates the huge potential of wind energy to be the answer that the world is looking for to fulfill its energy needs. The key engineering issues in utilizing wind energy are: * The wind-its characteristics and reliability; how it can be measured, quantified and harnessed; * The turbines-their past achievements and future challenges, covering a range of sizes...from 50 W to 5 MW and beyond; * The wind farms-the assembly of individual turbines into wind power stations...their optimization and development; and * Going offshore-the promise of a very large resource but with major new technical challenges (European Wind Energy Association 4). During the 1990s, there were continuous refinements in wind energy technology that culminated in a tremendous increase in the rotor diameter of commercially available wind turbines, which went "30 m to more than 60 m" over this period (Burton, et al 7). With the advancements that have been made in wind power technology, it has been estimated that 51 percent of the worlds energy needs can be supplied by wind, which will require 3.8 million large wind turbines, with each turbine rated at 5 megawatts (Jacobson and Delucchi 60). While this sounds like a huge number, the footprint for these turbines, which of course would be distributed throughout the world, would collectively be only 50 square kilometers, which is an ...
