being the envy of others, and being liked - that his values of right and wrong had become confused (Centola 29). Willy instilled his warped priorities into his sons
Biff and Happy to the point that they were incapable of distinguishing right from wrong. As far as Willy saw it, the end (achieving the American Dream) always justifies
the means (doing whatever is necessary to obtain the dream, no matter how unethical). Willy never ascended to his lofty ideal despite the fact that he had a loving
and supportive wife, two healthy sons, a longtime if lackluster career as a salesman, and a nice house in the suburbs with a nearly paid off mortgage. He was
nearing retirement age, and Willy Loman should have been a happy man. But since he viewed his own life as a failure, he focused all of his efforts on
his sons, expecting them to live out his American Dream whether they wanted to or not. He wanted to be a role model to his boys of what a
successful and well-respected man should be; however, the legacy he left as a father was a model of how a man should not live his life. Millers stage directions describe
