towering figure of great importance; he is an ordinary man. Still, he represents Everyman, and in a sense his failure stands for the failure of all those who cannot achieve their dreams. This paper discusses the prompt "Willy Lomans life is an American Dream gone awry" and argues that the assertion is correct: his life is the dream gone bad. Discussion The "American Dream" is the idea that anyone who works hard and obeys societys rules can succeed, and succeed handsomely. They may not become fabulously wealthy, though that is part of the dream, but they will have enough to live comfortably. An integral part of this scenario is that their children will do even better than they did. Willy Loman has worked hard all of his life, and has achieved nothing. Hes about to lose his job, his sanity is in question, he has no money, and his sons are underachievers who believe the world owes them a living. It is in the failure of his sons that Willys own failure is clearly demonstrated. The boys are named Biff and Happy. Who in his right mind would give his sons such names? "Biff" suggests a lifeguard on a California beach somewhere, which is silly as the family lives in New York City. And "Happy" is ridiculous; perhaps Willy thought that if he gave his son that name, the boy would be happy. If so, the tactic failed. As the play opens the "boys" (they are 34 and 32, hardly boys) are back at home for a visit, or to stay for a while; its not clear.
