Loman and that Millers play is in fact a savage critique on American materialism and the hollowness of the American Dream. Is her statement true, or is Death of a Salesman about the dark side of human nature, or more accurately, about the dark side of Willy Loman? How much blame does America get for the likes of Loman? McCarthy dictates that the audience has to decide whether or not the anguish of Willy Loman in "Death of a Salesman" is respectable, and also, whether the common man worthy of tragedy (Atkinson PG). In other words, tragedies are what happens and are beyond the scope of ordinary life. They may involve volcanoes, car crashes, hurricanes and things of that nature, but not the disturbing life of an American salesman. McCarthy goes on and says that Willy Loman lives in a tragic era where millions have been destroyed by forces that they do not understand or control (PG). While she too sees Loman as a pathetic creature, she blames consumerism, society, the media and so forth. She blames America and its being entrenched in capitalism at a time when it was not popular to do so, but is she right? Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman is a rather pathetic character. He is average, almost typical, but maybe too stereotypical. He is someone who today would appear on The Jerry Springer Show. His life has always been dysfunctional and all he ever wanted was to make something of himself. The character desired success in general, to make a lot of money and to be admired.
