digging up dirt on other people. He is an intriguing man in many ways and the reader of the novel can well like, or dislike him throughout his development.
The following paper examines his development in the novel. Willie Talos in All the Kings Men by Robert Penn Warren Willie
is a powerful man, right from the beginning, and a man who came from poverty to become a leader of his people, the governor of his state. In the beginning
the story is essentially establishing these facts. Willy is, at this point in the novel, going to visit his father, who is obviously from a simple life, which further illustrates
Willies humble beginnings. But, it is also a chapter that introduces the reader to the power possessed by Willie. While Willie simply wants
a day off from being governor and the press and the people, and wishes to go see his father, the people push him for a speech and Willie proves incredibly
smooth and convincing as he states the following: "If they had politicians back in those days, they said, Gimme, just like all of us politicians do. Gimme, gimme, my names
Jimmie. But Im not a politician today. Im taking the day off. Im not even going to ask you to vote for me" (Warren 10).
