half a century ago (PG; Smith A15). It was these words he used in 1945 to open what many consider to be his greatest work, the dark and brooding
play entitled The Glass Menagerie. His choice of opening words, in perfect Williams style, set the pace for the language and imagery used throughout the play and represent a
perfect synopsis of what is yet to come, for in these few words Williams has beautifully summed up the gist and meaning of the entire work. II. Plot
and Themes The Glass Menagerie is indeed an illusion that is masquerading as truth, as well as reality that is masked in illusion. It is a story of
hopeful dreams that die long, slow deaths in the light of harsh realities, of loneliness and desperation and the longing for escape that we all feel at one point or

dysfunction goes far beyond the limits of the household, hinting at a world that is itself out of sync and in a state of disarray. Williams uses a combination
of figurative language, vivid imagery, and a generous sprinkling of symbolism and irony to accomplish this feat, and the result is a work that is as poignant as it is
depressing. The Glass Menagerie is based on the authors own personal experiences of growing up in a dysfunctional family unit, experiences that haunted him for the rest of his life.
