Ethics Awareness Inventory self-assessment provides a set of questions to allow for self scoring which will then lead to the characterisation of an individual against one of four dimensions;
character/ virtue, obligation/ deontology, results/utilitarianism and equity/relativism. Undertaking this test and increasing the level of self awareness can help an individual to identify the way that their values and approach
can be aligned with the values f a firm. In order to be aligned there does not need to be an exact match with the management values, areas of commonalty
need to be identified. If an individual is found to be orientated by results/utilitarianism they are aligned to the ideas of Mills where the ethics of a situation or decision
needs to be judged with reference to the consequences of that decision. The concept of utilitarianism removes the emotional illogic from a decision and promotes the idea that there should
be a logical calculation to determine which of the potential actions or decisions would result in the greatest good or happiness. Therefore, an individual who is orientated by results/utilitarianism is
looking at the results they will be able to achieve, but at least they have a moral responsibility in order to look in the different trade-offs so that the greatest
utility "goodness" can be provided. This can be contrasted with other approaches, for example the obligation/ deontology is well which is based on the concept of duty and is most
aligned with the theories of Kant, which does not allow for the consideration of potential outcomes, but looks only at what obligations exist. The main concern of the individual whose
results orientated is the "bottom line", this approach allows an individual to consider the potential outcomes as well as assessing potential trade-offs that may be involved in pursuing different outcome.
